He arrived permanently in Australia in 1976, and finished his education at Knox Grammar school, Sydney. He graduated from NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) in 1981. Mr. Weaving won the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award for Best Actor in a leading role for his work in _Proof (1991)_ (qv). He later on received an AFI Award nomination for Best Actor in a leading role for his work in _Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, The (1994)_ (qv). He won his second AFI Award for Best Actor in a leading role for his work in
_Interview, The (1998)_ (qv), he also won best acting prize at the Montreal Film Festival from the same work. In 1998, Hugo Weaving won Australian star of the year.
